SOUTH BEND - Dorothy Spencer Higgins, 87, widow of Virgil Higgins, died Sunday, December 27, 2009, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, SC. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, from 2-4 p.m. in Anderson Funeral Home. Mrs. Higgins was born on September 18, 1922, in South Bend, IN. She is the daughter of the late William Spencer and Edna Bradburn Spencer. Mr. Higgins was an avid bowler; she and her son were the only mother and son Senior Citizens bowling on the same team together. She was a member of the Marine Corps Legion. "To our very "Special Mother" we hate to say Good-By and let you go. Now its time for you to rest." Surviving are three sons, Barry Higgins, Gary (Ginny) Higgins and Randy (Kerry) Higgins, all of Beaufort, SC; one daughter, Diane (Wayne) Wainscott of South Bend, IN; one brother, Wallace Spencer; two sisters, Betty DeVos and Beverly Stevens; daughter-in-law, Sandra Nemes of Port Charlotte, FL; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, and a son, Frank A. Nemes. The family suggests that donations be made to the Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, SC 29935. Anderson Funeral Home is serving the family.
