SOUTH BEND - Paul Anthony Hessling, 79, formerly of South Bend,
died April 11, 2010, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro NC,
surrounded by his family. He was born June 13, 1930, in Delphos,
OH, to William and Leone Kehres Hessling, and had lived most of
his life in South Bend, retiring to North Carolina in 2006. He is
survived by his wife of 58 years, Thelma Field Hessling; and six
children, Peter Hessling and wife, Janet of Durham NC, Paul
Hessling and wife, Janice of Greensboro, NC, Anthony Hessling of
South Bend, IN, Christopher Hessling of Greensboro, NC, Alexandra
Hessling of South Bend, IN, and Victoria Hessling of Greensboro,
NC; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also
survived by two brothers, Richard Hessling and wife, Evelyn of
San Diego CA, and William Hessling of Portland OR. He was
preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Hessling.
Paul graduated from Central Catholic High School in South Bend in
1947 and the University of Notre Dame in 1952, and soon began a
long career at The Associates in South Bend. He later worked for
the federal government and the U.S. Postal Service. He also
managed athletic program sales at Notre Dame for many years.
Since his retirement, he and Thelma enjoyed cruising, visiting
Alaska, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal, and New England and
the Canadian Maritimes. Following a memorial Mass, his ashes were
interred at the columbarium at St. Pius X Catholic Church in
Greensboro, NC. Condolences may be sent to Thelma Hessling at
