W. Raymond Hertel
Services for W. Raymond (Cy) Hertel, 75, of Seattle Wash., formerly of South Bend, who died Thursday night, were to be held today in St. Hubert Church on Whidbey Island, Puget Sound, Wash. Burial was to follow on Whidbey Island.
Hertel was a retired employee of the Pacific Car & Foundry Co. His wife, Peggy, survives. Also surviving are four sons, three daughters; six sisters, Sister M. Ivan, C.S.C., Sister John Michael, C.S.C., Sister Clare Marie, C.S.C., Hildegarde Hertel and Mrs. Elmer J. Danch, all of South Bend, and Mrs. Paul Irish, of Portland, Ore., and two brothers, Paul of South Bend and Norbert of Portland.
A 1925 graduate of South Bend High School, he was a member of football and basketball teams coached by the late Elmer. H. Burnham. Hertel also competed on South Bend High School swimming and track teams. He served as an official for the city basketball league games and was the first supervisor of ushers at the Notre Dame Stadium when it opened in 1930. He studied civil engineering at the University of Notre Dame.
