Mary C. Hertel, 93, of Regency Place, South Bend, Ind., died at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 31, in Regency Place. She was born on July 16, 1907 in Detroit, Mich. to Polly (Nowak) and Leo Bloom, both of whom preceded her in death.
On November 16, 1926, in South Bend, as Mary C. Bloom, she married Elmer C. Hertel, who preceded her in death on June 17, 1976.Mrs. Hertel is survived by two daughters, Phyllis (Robert) Nielsen of Mishawaka, Ind. and Carol (Brian) Hedman of Granger, Ind.; a son, Robert E. (Carolyn) Hertel of South Bend; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Polly Barnes of Mishawaka and Clara Miller of Troy, Mich.; and by three brothers, Mike and Leo Bloom, both of South Bend, and John Bloom of Mishawaka.
Mrs. Hertel was a homemaker. She had been employed at Studebaker Corporation and I. and M. Electric Company. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, South Bend and its Women's Guild, Young at Hearts Group and the Friendship Class, and did Homebound Visitation for the church. She was a member of United Commercial Travelers, Mary Ann Club at Studebakers, F.M.'s of Grace United Methodist Church and was a former president of the F.M.'s. She served on the Jamestown Board of Governors and did volunteer work at the Salvation Army, Century Center, Memorial Hospital and the Cancer Society.
Services for Mrs. Hertel will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 3 in Zion United Church of Christ, 715 East Wayne St., South Bend. Rev. John vonLackum III of Zion United Church of Christ will conduct the services. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2 in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 715 East Wayne St., South Bend, IN 46617.
