Herron Jr.

SOUTH BEND - Mr. Vester "Speedy" Herron Jr. passed from
this life at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in the Ironwood
Health and Rehabilitation Center following an illness. Mr.
Herron, a resident of Van Buren Street, South Bend, Indiana, was
80 years of age. On September 6, 1929, in Humboldt, Tennessee, he
was born to the union of Vester and Lizzie (Lax) Herron Sr.
Coming from Lexington, Tennessee, he relocated to South Bend as a
young man. Vester and Sharon Williams were married on September
8, 2001, in South Bend. Mr. Herron was employed for over 20 years
in the maintenance department, making ice for the Ice Box Skating
Rink. Other employment included The University of Notre Dame; his
own band, Speedy and the Turbins; Hebrew Day Care as a bus
driver; Steel Warehouse and Zamboni's where he cleaned ice. Among
his hobbies was fishing, nature, gadgets, fixing things; he loved
to see how things were made so he could rebuild them. He was a
mechanic and musician, playing all instruments, and he loved his
band. In addition, he was a member of Revelations Church of God
in Christ. Mr. Herron is survived by a loving family that include
his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Shavon (Abdul) Robinson of
Mishawaka, Indiana; a stepdaughter, Ericka William-Darden of
South Bend, Indiana; six sons, Stuyvesant (Sharon) Herron of
Grape Vine, Texas, Julio (Ann) Herron of Detroit, Michigan,
Maurice (Cynthia) Herron of Los Angeles, California, Martino
(Julie) Herron of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Octavious Herron of Miami,
Florida, and Nakia (Trudy) Herron of South Bend, Indiana;
numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister,
Claudine Taborn; three brothers, Jimmy (Darlene) Herron, Ernest
Herron and Superintendent Robert (Tinnie) Herron Sr., all of
South Bend, Indiana; special friends, The Lerman family, and many
other relatives and friends. Family members who preceded him in
death along with his parents, Vester and Lizzie Herron, were a
son, Sylvester Herron; two sisters, Jesse Renee Fountain and
Tinnie Rhodes; and three brothers, Arzo Herron, Johnny Herron and
James Herron. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 13,
2010, at 1 p.m. in Revelations Church of God in Christ. Interment
will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may call in
the church one hour prior to the services. Arrangements have been
entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where messages of
