Brother Sabinus Herbert CSC, 48, superintendent of printing of the Ave Maria Press on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, died at 7:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph Hospital as a result of a heart attack. He had attended a dinner for university publications personnel on the campus Thursday night and was taken to the hospital after he became ill early this morning in the community residence on campus. He had been superintendent of printing for nine years. Previously he worked in the composing room of the press for four years. He was publisher of the Bengal Digest, a periodical published at the pressfrom 1945 to 1948. He was also author of a number of articles for the Associates of Joseph and a book “Maid of Corinaldo” published by Dujarie Press on the campus in October 1953.

 

Born in Troy, N.Y, Jan. 2, 1907, Brother Sabinus, whose family name was John Jjoseph Herbert, became a brother Aug. 15, 1941 at Holy Cross Novitiate, North Dartmouth, Mass. and took his final vows at Notre Dame on Aug. 16, 1945. He was superintendent of Columba Hall on the campus and director of the Brother Columba Apostate of the Sacred Heart at the community house, in addition to his duties at the press. He was a member of the Catholic Press Assn. and the Michiana Club of the International Assn. of Printing House Craftsman. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Anna Johnson, and a brother, J. Herbert, both of Troy, N.Y.

 

The office of the dead will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, and the funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the church. Friends may call in Columba Hall on the campus after 1 p.m. Saturday.
