SOUTH BEND - Carlyle F. Herald of Regency Place, South Bend, IN, died March 4, 2010, at 9:15 p.m. He was born on November 29, 1923, in Ligonier, IN, to Howard and Evelyn (Franks) Herald. He married Lulabelle Howell in 1943 in Cromwell, IN, who predeceased him in death in November 1996. He is survived by his daughter, Claudia (Don) Stohler of South Bend; and son, Tom (Cyndee) Herald of Syracuse; five grandchildren, Al (Carolyn), Bill (Noell) and Adam Stohler, Nikki (Jeff) Dyson and Brent Herald; and six great-grandchildren, Clayton, Reagan, Mason and Haven Stohler, Vaughn and Mya Dyson. Carlyle grew up on Alphaland Farms near Ligonier, IN, which he owned and operated with his son, Tom, until 1984 when he and Lu retired to Mesa, AZ. In 1994 they returned to the South Bend area. In retirement he worked for over 10 years at the Martins at SR 23 and Ironwood. In addition to his career as a farmer, Carlyle was very active in his community churches. He served on the Noble County Council and served many positions in the Ligonier Presbyterian Church as well as other churches in the communities where he lived. In his late 70s, he made a mission trip to Kenya, Africa. He was a 65+ year member of the Ligonier Masonic Lodge 185 F & AM, a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, the Orak Shrine, the Elks, and the Lions. As a young father, he was active in 4-H leadership and his son's athletic activities. Carlyle was always one to utilize his God-given talents, and to the end of his life sought ways to contribute, serve and brighten the lives of others. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 S. Frances Street, South Bend, with Rev. James B. Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services in the church, where a Masonic service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon at the church.
