Mary Alice Helm, 83, passed away in
the Saint Joseph Regional M edical Center on Saturday, Sept. 22,
2001.
Mary was born on June 14, 1918, to Hanse and
Clara (Tiff) Johnson in Joel, Wis. Mary had lived
in South Bend for the last seven years, moving here from Ely,
Minn. She was best known for her dancing and her love of a good
polka. She also loved to cook and enjoyed picnics at Potato Creek
as well as watching the ducks at Leeper Park.
Mary is survived by her two sons, Thomas and
Glen Helm, both of Babbitt, Minn.; a daughter, Susan Bromeling
of South Bend; her four sisters, Agnes Groehler of Turtle
Lake, Wis., Froni Johnson of Virginia, Wis., Katherine Haag
of Del Rio, Texas, and Betty Youngren of Turtle Lake; her
two brothers, Art Johnson of Coon Rapids, Minn., and George
Johnson of Babbitt; five grandchildren, Tina, Kevin, Donna,
Donald Jr. and Cliff; seven great-grandchildren, Matt, Traves,
Christy, Jessica, Justina, Stella and Jasmine; and by several
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Scott;
and a brother, Clarence Johnson. She was also preceded by a
daughter, Beverly Helm; and by a son, George Helm Jr.
Funeral services for Mary will be at 2 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral
Home, 2718 South Michigan Street. Calling will be one hour prior
to the service. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
