SOUTH BEND - Margaret J. Helmen, 95, of LaCenter, Minn., formerly of South Bend, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday in LaCenter Healthcare Center. Mrs. Helmen served as St. Joseph County clerk in 1943 and retired in 1960 as a secretary from the former Federal Savings & Loan Association. She was born Dec. 10, 1898, in Chicago, and lived in South Bend until 1982.

On March 23, 1922, in South Bend, as Margaret J. Ackerberg, she married Vernon Helmen. He died in 1942. She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Rutledge of Henderson, Nev.; a son, Vernon of New Prague, Minn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was a 75-year member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and a former member of Community Congregational Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 1201 S. Michigan St. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before services in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.
