Brother Majella Hegerty CSC, 82, died
Monday evening in Dujarie House, University of Notre Dame, after
an illness. Brother Hegarty was born April 15, 1903 in
Indianapolis. He is survived by two sisters, Agnes Griffin of
Indianapolis and Sister Anne Marie Hegarty of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in St.
Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross Brothers Center and burial will be in
St. Joseph Cemetery at the Center. Friends may call after 4 p.m.
Wednesday in the Center where a funeral mass will be at 7:30 p.m.
Brother Majella entered Holy Cross on Oct.
22, 1922, received his habit July 1, 1923, made his first vows
July 2, 1924 and professed hie final vows in the congregation
July 2, 1927. He received a B.A. degree from the University of
Notre Dame and an M.A. from Columbia Teachers College, New York.
From 1926-28 he taught at Holy Cross High School, New Orleans;
from 1928-29 at Central Catholic High School, Fort Wayne, and St.
Charles Boys Home, Milwaukee; from 1929-33 at Cathedral High
School, Indianapolis and from 1933-35 at Monsignor Coyle High
School, Taunton, Mass. From 1936 to 1939 he taught at Vincentian
Institude, Albany, M.Y.; from 1939-1947 at Sacred Heart
Juniorate, Watertown, Wis.; and from 1947-57 at St. Edwards
University, Austin, Texas.
From 1957 to 1971 he served as supervisor of
instruction for Holy Cross Brothers' Schools on the Midwest
Province. From 1971 to 1974 he was assistant librarian at Holy
Cross Junior College. In December 1974 he retired to Columbia
Hall where he remained until November 1984. At that time he
became an in-residence patient at Dujarie House until his death.
Brother Mejella was noted for his book Technique of
Teaching, which was widely used by beginning teachers
across the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.
