John W. Hedrick

SOUTH BEND - John W. Hedrick, 76, of South Bend, passed away at 2:27 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, after an extended illness. Mr. Hedrick was born on December 2, 1933, in Detroit, MI, and had resided in the South Bend area since 1964, coming from Detroit, MI. On November 23, 1953, he married the former Patricia A. Whitney, who passed away on May 28, 1993. On April 29, 1997, he married Yvonne K. Hutchins, who passed away in December 2004, from whom he was divorced. On September 15, 2001, he married the former Frances E. (Bowers) Holder, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Sharon D. Lippert of Mesa, AZ, Patricia J. (Christopher) Crain of Jasper, IN, and Julie E. Hedrick of South Bend; a stepdaughter, Karen (Brian) Nokes of South Bend; three sons, Robert A. Hedrick of South Bend, James D. Hedrick of Holiday Island, Arkansas, and Steven M. Hedrick of Holiday Island, Arkansas; a stepson, Steven R. Holder of South Bend; a stepsister, Milly Matis of East Pointe, MI; and a stepbrother, George (Kathy) Stepulla of Canton, MI. Also nine grandchildren, Joseph Hedrick, Jessica Fiechtner, Patrick Crain, Christa Crain, Amy Miner, Robert Miner, Jason Huffer, Ronald Huffer and Tyler Nokes; and two great-grandchildren, Serafina Fiechtner and Abigail Miner, all whom he loved and cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hedrick and Katherine Stepulla. Also by three sisters, Delores Miechle, Patricia Estes and Janice Carson, and by a brother, Robert A. Hedrick. Mr. Hedrick retired from United Van Lines and then became self-employed. His hobbies were woodworking, softball, all sports in general. He was also an avid restorer and collector of Thunderbirds. John played softball and baseball for 65 years. He was a member of Southlawn United Methodist Church, Battell Senior Softball League, Vintage Thunderbird Clubs of America, and rode cross-country on his bicycle starting June 4th, 1989, in Seattle, Washington, and arriving in Atlantic City on Labor Day 1989. Mr. Hedrick was a devoted Christian who will be dearly missed by his loving family, his church family, and all who had the opportunity to know this wonderful man. The family would like all memorial contributions made to Southlawn United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers. The address of the church is 60756 US 31 South, South Bend, IN 46614. Visitation hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 5th, in Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road / Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6th, at Southlawn United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Pastors Dr./Rev. Joseph Baunoch and Rev. Ronald Dixon will be officiating. Burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Hedrick family.
