Charles Kenneth Hazen, 80, of 52090
Contour Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 2:20 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 25, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. Hazen was born
June 6, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Charles and Vera (Boke)
Hazen, and had lived in South Bend since 1930. He was also
preceded in death by his brother, John Hazen, and his sister,
Vera Hazen Harren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53
years, Lucille (Houin), to whom he was married on Jan. 8,
1949. He is also survived by two sons, Michael (Linda) Hazen of
Odgen Dunes, Ind., and Brian (Linda) Hazen of Osceola, Ind.; one
daughter, Jean Hazen (John) Werntz of Granger, Ind.; nine
grandchildren, Andrea Hazen of Chicago, Ill., Erica Hazen of
Mishawaka, Ind., Jodi Meehan of Fishers, Ind., Jeff Qualizza
of Valparaiso, Ind., Ehren Werntz of Muncie, Ind., Hanna
Werntz of Granger, and Phillip, Daniel and Jacob Hazen of
Osceola; one great-grandson, his namesake, Charles Hazen of
Mishawaka; and by a sister, Betty Hazen Johnson of South
Bend.
Charlie was a 1939 graduate of South Bend
Central High School and attended the U niversity of Notre Dame.
He was a combat veteran of the United States Navy in the Pacific
Theater of World War II. He was an employee of the Bendix
Corporation in South Bend for 37 years. He frequented and was a
seasonal resident of Hackensack, Minn., where he pursued his
hobbies of fishing and relaxing with family and friends. He was a
lifelong sports fan, and was respected and loved by many. He was
notable for his mischievous character and loving humor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
10 a.m. Wednesday in Christ the King Catholic C hurch, with Rev.
Ronald Trippi, CSC, officiating. Burial will follow at Highland
Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 27, in
the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, where a
parish R osary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Memorial
contributions in the name of Charles Hazen may be made to St.
Joseph's High School Foundation, 1441 N. Michigan Street, South
Bend, IN 46617.
