Shirley I. Hazelton, 71, of the
Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend, Ind.,
died following a lengthy illness at 10:09 a.m. on Wednesday, June
3, in Cardinal. Mrs. Hazelton was born on May 30, 1927, in Flint,
Mich., to Homer and Nora (Clark) Rector, and had lived in
the South Bend area since 1965, coming from Flint.
On June 2, 1951, in Springfield, Mass., as
Shirley I. Rector, she married Robert C. Hazelton, who
survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Janet A. Fye
of Granger, Ind.; a son, Kenneth D. (Vicki) Hazelton of
Mishawaka, Ind.; two grandsons, Matt Fye and Todd Hazelton; one
great-grandson, Collin Hazelton; a sister, Margaret ''Peg'' Thomas
of Sandusky, Mich.; and by a brother, Homer L. (Bev) Rector of
Auburn, Mich.
Mrs. Hazelton retired as a medical assistant
with Dr. James Lorber in 1990. She was a member of Westminster
Presbyterian Church in South Bend, and had been active with the
Girl Scouts and Brownies in Grand Blanc, Mich., before moving to
South Bend.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on
Saturday, June 6, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033
Cleveland Road, with Rev. Daniel Clark of Westminster
Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will take place on
Tuesday, June 9, in Bayview Cemetery, Franklin, Maine. Friends
may call from noon until the time of services on Saturday in the
funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the
