James E. Haynes, 83, of Plover Lane,
South Bend, Ind., died Monday evening, Sept. 17, in the Saint
Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Jim retired from Eli Lilly
& Company as a sales representative for over 40 years, and
was a registered pharmacist in Minnesota, South Dakota and
Indiana since June 1942. He was born Dec. 29, 1917, in New Ulm,
Minn., to George W. and Mary (Brabender) Haynes, who
preceded him in death. He had lived in South Bend since 1948. He
was also preceded in death by a grandson, James H. Haynes.
On Sept. 14, 1943, in Wahpeton, N.D., he
married Madge Quine, who survives. He is also survived by
three daughters, Kathaleen Buening of Green Bay, Wis.,
Mary Elizabeth Petersen of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Karen
Haynes of South Bend; a son, George Q. Haynes of South Bend; four
grandchildren; a sister, Margurette Grue of St. Paul,
Minn.; and by a brother, Robert Haynes of St. Paul, Minn.
Jim was a member of Christ the King Catholic
Church, American Turners, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He
was a graduate of South Dakota State University and attended St.
Thomas College in St. Paul, and was a member of Knights of
Columbus Council 553. Jim was a World War II Navy lieutenant who
landed on Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy.
Mass of Christian B urial will be held at
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in Christ the King Catholic
Church, 933 and Darden Road. Cremation will follow with interment
at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind., at a later
date. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the HICKEY
FUNERAL HOME, 17131 Cleveland Road, 219-289-1000, where a Rosary
will be said at 4:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be
