SOUTH BEND - Danny E. Haymes, 63, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 1:07 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008, in Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Danny was born on June 4, 1945, in Detroit, MI, to Hayden and Marjorie (Gardner) Haymes. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967. He was especially fond of the times he spent onboard the icebreaker USS Atka AGB-3, cruising to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Danny retired in 1999 from A.M. General, where he was employed for 30 years. On November 30, 1968, in Kentucky, he married Helen Bertke White, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, SSG Mark White, U.S. Army (Ret.), of Augusta, GA, and Jeff White of South Bend, IN; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharon and Larry Gillim of Owensboro, KY; and a brother-in-law, Frank Bertke III of Owensboro, KY. He was preceded in death by his father, Hayden Haymes in 1947; and by his mother, Marjorie (Gardner) Russellburg in 1988.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where members of the American Legion Bendix Post #284 will conduct military services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
