SOUTH BEND - Rev. Arthur S. Harvey CSC, 96, died on Monday, February 4, 2008, in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN. He was born May 11, 1911, in Washington, D.C., to Arthur and Annie (Sisler) Harvey. After attending Saint Paul Grade School and High School he worked for the Washington Railway and Electric Company until coming to Notre Dame in 1942 as a candidate for Holy Cross. He entered Saint Joseph Novitiate August 15, 1943, and made his first profession the next year. Returning to Moreau Seminary and Notre Dame he graduated in June of 1947 and returned home to the Washington, D.C., area for the study of theology at Holy Cross College. Fr. Harvey was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1951, at Catholic University in Washington by Bishop McManara in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. For the next two years he resided at Holy Cross College and studied drama at Catholic University and received a graduate degree in August 1953.

Shortly thereafter he began a long and distinguished career in teaching drama and directing plays at Notre Dame. One of his many productions included "Hamlet" and "Long Day's Journey Into the Night" along with musicals like "My Fair Lady" and "South Pacific." In many and various ways he touched the lives of students and fellow community and faculty members as teacher, confessor, and friend. He provided the firm foundation for the various programs in performing arts that exist on campus today. After a sabbatical program during the 1968-69 school year, he returned to Notre Dame as an assistant to Fr. Edmund P. Joyce, executive vice president of the University. In 1993 he moved to Holy Cross House. Last year the Notre Dame Alumni Association named an award in honor of Fr. Harvey. The Rev. Arthur S. Harvey Award is given to a Notre Dame graduate for outstanding contributions to the performing arts. The first recipient of the award was, fittingly, Fr. Harvey. Fr. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Annie (Sisler) Harvard, and a brother, Richard Harvey. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Betty Harvey.

Viewing will be held for Fr. Harvey in the chapel of Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, on Sunday, February 10th, beginning at 2:30 p.m. with a wake service at 3:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame, on Monday, February 11th, at 3:30 p.m. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
