SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Gerald (Maura Josephine Hartney) CSC,
98, was born in Limerick, Ireland, daughter of the late Michael
J. Hartney and Margaret Glynn Hartney. Sister Gerald was the
older of the two Hartney daughters. Margaret (Franz) Forrester
predeceased her. Sister is survived by her nephews, Franz
Alexander Forrester, England, and Franz Robert Forrester, Brazil;
niece, Sonia Forrester, Zimbabwe Africa; and cousins, Bridget
Murphy, Limerick Ireland and Robert Murphy, New Jersey. Sister
Gerald was educated in schools in Limerick Ireland and had
advanced level classes at Limerick Municipal Institute. She
became proficient as a typist and clerk. Sister entered the
congregation of the sisters of the Holy Cross in 1929, and taught
at St. Theodore's, Chicago, IL. Her next assignment was as the
accountant, Deming, NM, and her career in accounting took off.
Sister Gerald had a remarkable career in her long lifetime. She
was a co-founder of the Healthcare Financial Management
Association. She received two honorary degrees; MS from Dunbarton
College, Washington DC and LLD from Saint Mary's College, Notre
Dame. In 2002 the American College of Health Care Executives
Congress inducted Sister into the Health Care Hall of Fame for
her accounting abilities and stewardship. Sister was general
treasurer for the congregation for 17 years and resource person
for Dioceses and religious orders. Sister was active in the
Ministry of prayer until her death. Memorial contributions may be
made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor
Fund, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, IN 46556.
Reception of the Body and Wake services will
be at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 in Church of Our Lady of Loretto,
Saint Mary's Notre Dame, IN. Funeral services will be at 10:30
a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint
Mary's Notre Dame
