Vernon R. Hartman, 69, of East Ewing
Street, South Bend, Ind., died Sunday, Nov. 4, in his residence.
He was born in South Bend on Oct. 14, 1932, to Vernon and Helen (Draves)
Hartman.
Vernon married the former Joan L. Haag in
South Bend in 1955. Mrs. Hartman survives. He is also survived by
their daughter, Cheryl Rivers-Hartman of Elkhart, Ind.; a
son, Stephen M. (Joanne) Hartman of South Bend; four
grandchildren, Eric Hartman, Bradley Hartman, Michaela Rivers and
Kyle Hartman; and a sister, Norma Topping of South Bend;
nieces, Penny Joo (Topping), Jessica, Sarah and Amanda Haag;
and by nephews, Gary and Bruce Topping.
For many years as a millwright, Mr. Hartman
worked for E.W.I. Retiring in 1995, he also worked for the former
Studebakers, Edwards Iron Works, Coffield Supply and Allied
Products. His favorite pastime was fishing and hunting which he
did as often as he cared. He was a member of 4 Season Bass Club
where he won numerous awards and was a member of United Auto
Workers. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953, and was stationed in
Germany, serving with the 502nd Engineer Company. Although he was
named after his father, he was known to everyone as Dick or
"Red."
Family and friends called from 4 to 7 p.m.
on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the FOREST G. HAY FUNERAL HOME. Mr.
Hartman's funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 7, in
the funeral home. Brother Steve Nani, CSC, will officiate the
funeral, and cremation will follow his service. Memorial
contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
