Former South Bend resident, Mike Hartman,
79, died after a brief illness at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, Dec.
31, in Bradenton, Fla. Mike was born in South Bend, Ind., on Aug.
3, 1919, to Grover C. and Orpha Mae (Koontz) Hartman. He
was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Iva Mae; and by
his brothers, Robert and Orville.
His wife, Joy Marie, also preceded him in
death on March 13, 1995. He is survived by a son, Dennis M.
(Janet) Hartman of South Bend, and a daughter, Peridra L. (Larry)
Parrish of Wixom, Mich.; grandchildren, Leanne (Steve) Jensen
of South Bend, Andrew M. Hartman of Chicago, Lu Marie (Larry)
Carlile of Guatier, Miss., and Lynn T. Parrish of Lowell,
Ind.; and by two great-grandchildren, Megan Jensen and Marisa Maguire.
Mike formerly owned the Hartman Fuel Company
of South Bend. During the late 1950s through mid 1970s, as Mike
Hartman Builders, Inc., he was instrumental in developing the Oak
Park Estates and Greenview North residential subdivisions. In
1977 Mike and Joy retired to live full-time in Bradenton, Fla.,
where they had an antique booth at the Red Barn Flea Market until
1995.
He was a veteran of World War II Pacific
Theater, serving as a gunner on a B24 in the 13th Army Air Corps.
Mike had been affiliated with the St. Joseph County Home Builders
Association, the Morris Park and South Bend Country Clubs, South
Bend Lions Club, South Bend Elks Club, South Bend Eagles, South
Bend Moose, Disabled American Veterans, Veteran of Foreign Wars
Post 50, Shriners Club of South Bend and Oddfellows of South
Bend. He also served as president of the board of directors of
Camp Millhouse of South Bend for several years, during which time
he was instrumental in the building of their swimming pool and
several buildings that remain today.
Cremation has taken place and there will be
no services. The family requests that memorial contributions be
made to Camp Millhouse, 25600 Kelly Road, South Bend, IN 46614.
