MISHAWAKA - Vermont C. Harter, 83, of Ireland Road, died at 8 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Hospital. Mr. Harter retired from the South Bend Community School Corp. as a counselor. He was born June 21, 1911, in Kendallville, and lived in the area most of his life.

On Oct. 21, 1934, in Indianapolis, he married Virginia Eby. She survives with a daughter, Nancy Harter of South Bend. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and member of Coalbush United Methodist Church, Notre Dame Alumni Association and Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Oakwood Foundation, Syracuse, or the church.
