Funeral services for Clinton F. Harden
will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, in the Pilgrim
Missionary Baptist Church, 116 Birdsell Street. Mr. Harden died
on Monday, March 22, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he resided with
his daughters. Mr. Harden, a former president of the South Bend
NAACP, was a longstanding member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church.
For many years he tirelessly worked on behalf of LaSalle Park
residents to improve living conditions and to promote home
ownership. In 1963, Mr. Harden ran for South Bend City Council
and made a second bid for office in 1964 when he ran for state
representative. He worked for the Dodge Manufacturing/Reliance
Electric Company for 28 years, retiring in 1982. He was an active
member of the church choir, the VFW, and the Driftwoods.
Mr. Harden is survived by his daughters,
Lynn Harden and Gayle Harden-Renfro, both of Cincinnati;
three sisters, Evelyn Gunn, Sarah Porter and
Pauline Woodson, all of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers,
twin Clifton Harden of Louisville, Miss., and Lawrence Harden of
Cleveland; a sister-in-law, Juanita (William) Gilkey; and
by a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded
in death by his parents, Ophelia and Frank Harden; his wife,
Blanche (Jackson) in 1997; a sister, Florence; four
brothers, Robert, Cappy, Frank and Paul; and by a brother-in-law,
John L. Jackson.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in
Alford's Mortuary, 1222 Napier Street. Friends may also call at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Gilkey. Alford's Mortuary is in
charge of handling the arrangements.
