Sister Mary Jovanna Hanlon CSC

Sister M. Jovanna (Joan Marie Hanlon), CSC, 89, was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Timothy Hanlon and Johanna Bradley. She is survived by her brother, Timothy Hanlon, Bethesda, Md.; and her sisters, Kathleen Hanlon O'Dea, Annapolis Md., and Noreen Hanlon Burnett, Bristow, Va.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Before entering the Congregation, Sister Jovanna was an office worker in her father's funeral parlor in Washington, D.C. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1940, made her first profession in 1942, and final profession on Aug. 15, 1945. She received her early education at St. Aloysius School, Washington, D.C., and St. Joseph's High School, Emmitsburg, Md. In 1936 she graduated from St. Joseph's College, Emmitsburg, with a bachelor's degree in English. From 1941 to 1962, Sister taught in the secondary schools of the Congregation in Virginia, Texas, Maryland and Washington, D.C. From 1962 to 1969 she was assistant to the Provincial Superior of the Eastern Province of the Congregation. From 1969 to 2002, Sister resumed her service to the Congregation in secondary education until ill health brought her to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

Wake service today, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame.

Funeral service on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m., Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
