SOUTH BEND - Dr. Harriet Hanley, formerly of South Bend, Indiana
passed away on April 21, 2010 in Vichy, France at the age of 86.
She was born in Gary, Ind. to Harry and Dorothy Hanley. She
graduated from Barnard College and New York Medical College, at
Columbia University. She took her internship at Patterson,
General Hospital in Patterson N.J. and her pediatrics residency
at Michael Reese in Chicago. She moved to South Bend in 1955 to
start her practice. She was the first female pediatrician in St.
Joseph County. She remained in private practice until 1969 when
she left to become the medical director of the Logan Resource
Community Center. She was associated with Logan Center from 1969
to 1971. Four years later she went back to private practice until
her retirement in 1994. Her many accomplishments throughout the
years included serving as Chairman of both Memorial and St.
Joseph Medical Center Pediatrics' Departments, founding a Celiac
Spine Society, and founding Mothers of Dyslexic Children. She was
a strong advocate of handicapped children and parent's rights and
was loved by many of her patients. She is survived by a sister
Marian Hanley Voss, and a niece Marge (Voss) Heine, both of
Phoenix, AZ. and a niece Peggy (Voss) Jenner of Albuquerque NM.
Services for Dr. Hanley will be private. Memorial contributions
may be made to Save the Children, 54 Wilton Rd., Westport, CT.
