Lucille A. Hochstetter Hammes

SOUTH BEND — Mrs. Lucille A. Hochstetter Hammes, 82, of New London Court, South Bend, Ind., passed away following an extended illness at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, in the Holy Cross Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. Lucille was born on Feb. 17, 1918, in Johnston City, Ill., to the late Michael and Suzanne (Harcharik) Preston.

 

She was married to her first husband, Bernard H. Hochstetter, on Sept. 9, 1939, in Johnston City. He preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1975. She moved to South Bend in 1939, coming from Chicago, Ill. Her children surviving from that marriage include three daughters, Suzanne (David) Ryan of Carmel, Ind., Kathleen Ewing of Indianapolis, Ind., and Tina (Tom) Jandris of River Forest, Ill.; two sons, William J. (Renee) Hochstetter of South Bend and Michael A. (Andrea) Hochstetter of Waukesha, Wis.; three grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Hutchcraft of West Frankfort, Ill.

 

On Feb. 14, 1980, she married James N. Hammes, who survives of South Bend, along with his family, a son-in-law, Bill Killilea of Mishawaka, Ind., husband of the late daughter of Mr. Hammes, Diane Killilea; a son, Michael J. (Marcia) Hammes of Mishawaka; a daughter, Toni (Bob) Kowalski of Evansville, Ind.; and by 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

 

She retired in 1980 after 15 years as a legal secretary for the United States District Attorney. Prior to that she was the secretary for the St. Joseph County Board of Zoning Appeals, and for the Visiting Nurse Association.

 

Mrs. Hammes was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, the Christ Child Society, Corvilla, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was an avid golfer having won many tournaments where she belonged in Florida, and here at the Morris Park and Knollwood Country Clubs.

 

The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. today in St. Anthony's, where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Christ Child Society.
