Bruce C. Hammerschmidt, 80, died
after a long illness on Saturday morning, March 11, in the Holy
Cross Care Center, South Bend, Ind. Bruce was born on April 26,
1919 in South Bend to Louis and Emma Hammerschmidt. He attended
Phillips Exeter Academy, Yale University, and Harvard Law School.
He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war Mr.
Hammerschmidt practiced law at the law firm of Hammerschmidt,
Amaral and Jones.
In 1943, he married Mary Ellen Davies
who preceded him in death. In 1975 he married Carolyn Cairns,
who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Kathy Fuller;
and by his grandchildren, Kate and Alex Fuller. Mr. Hammerschmidt
served as president of the local bar association. He was a lawyer
for economic development of South Bend and served on the boards
of Signal Point and South Bend Country Clubs, and was very active
on the board of Memorial Hospital.
Visitation for Mr. Hammerschmidt will be at
1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, at First Presbyterian Church, 333 W.
Colfax, South Bend, where memorial services will be conducted at
2 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu
of flowers to Memorial Hospital.
The Welsheimer Funeral Home is handling
arrangements.
