Rev. Joseph E. Haley CSC, 72, died
Monday in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, after an illness. He was
born Feb. 25, 1915 in Sewickley, Pa. He entered the Holy Cross
Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, Aug. 15, 1934 and made his final
profession June 25, 1939. He was ordained to the priesthood June
15, 1941. Most of his ministry was devoted to high school and
university teaching. He taught at Gibault School for Boys from
1941 to 1946 and was assigned to the University of Notre Dame
from 1946 to 1961. In 1961 he moved to the University of
Portland, where he was a teacher and chaplain until 1978. From
1978 to 1980 he served as the religious superior of the Holy
Cross Community in Oregon. From 1980 to 1986 he served the parish
of St. Clement of Hayward, Calif. until returning to Holy Cross
House in 1986. He was the author of several books in theology and
Christian living and edited the Proceedings of the Institute of
Spirituality, which was held at Notre Dame during the 1950s.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in
Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame with burial in Holy Cross
Community Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 4 p.m.
Wednesday at Moreau Seminary, where a wake service will be at
7:30 p.m.
