Rev. Corneilius J. Haggerty CSC, 92, who taught philosophy and religion at the University of Notre Dame for 35 years, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the Holy Cross House at Notre Dame. Father Hagerty was born on Nov. 7, 1885, in South Bend and entered the Holy Cross Seminary in 1899. He was ordained at Notre Dame in 1909. He received a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in 1906 and earned his doctorate from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. in 1911. Besides his work at Notre Dame, he taught at University of Portland and St. Edward’s University, Austin, Tex. He also served as chaplain to the Holy Cross Brothers at Notre Dame before his retirement in 1960. Surviving is a niece. Miss Margaret Bergan of South Bend

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Moreau Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, with Rev. Leo A. Pursley, retired bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese, officiating. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday in Moreau Seminary, where a wake will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Services for Rev. Corneilius Hagerty, CSC, 91, a long time teacher of philosophy and religion at Notre Dame will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Moreau Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, with Rev. Leo A. Pursley, retired bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese, officiating. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today in Moreau Seminary, where a wake will be held at 7:30 p.m. today. Music for the mass will be arranged by Brother Daniel Kane, formerly a music teacher at St. Joseph High School.

 

Father Hagerty was the oldest living member of the Congregation of Holy Cross and was an author of numerous religious tracts and pamphlets. He is survived by four nieces, Mrs. L. A. Mullins of Fort Lauderdale, Fls., Mrs. C. J. Westhoven and Miss Julia Hagerty, both of Chicago, and Miss Margaret Bergan of South Bend; and three nephews Paul E. Bergan of South Bend, Dr. Joseph Bergan of Michigan City, and Dr. C. S. Hagerty of Chicago.
