Rev. Barry J. Hagan, C.S.C., 70, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Indiana Province, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind., on Wednesday, March 27, 2002.

 

Father Hagan was born on May 31, 1931, in Glendive, Mont. He was the son of the late Paul J. and Aimee (Barry) Hagan of Glendive. Following his graduation from Dawson County High School in 1949, he attended Dawson County Junior College before enrolling in the University of Portland, Portland, Ore., in 1952.

 

At the University of Portland, Fr. Hagan met the Congregation of Holy Cross and entered the Holy Cross community in 1954. He completed his theological studies at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood on June 8, 1960, at Notre Dame.

 

Following advanced studies in History at the University of Notre Dame, Father Hagan was assigned to teach at the University of Portland. He served there continuously, working as a professor in the Department of History and later as the University Archivist. As a scholar, Father Hagan was an expert in United States military history specializing in the conflicts in the Western United States in the 19th century.

 

Father Hagan is survived by a sister, Sister Mary Gavin Hagan, O.S.F., of Rochester, Minn.; and by a brother, Mr. Thomas Hagan of Olympia, Wash.

 

A wake service will be held for Father Barry J. Hagan, C.S.C., in the chapel of Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2002. Burial will follow at the Community Cemetery, Notre Dame.
