Carl Hafstrom, 85, of the Milton Home, South
Bend, Ind., formerly of West Washington Avenue, passed away at
6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the Milton Home. He was born on
Feb. 15, 1916, in South Bend, to the late Wilhelm and Eugenia (Clarquist)
Hafstrom.
On June 17, 1952, in South Bend, he married
Virginia Janiszczak, who preceded him in death on March
24, 1999. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Anderson
and Thelma Hunter; and by two brothers, Arthur and
Rudy Hafstrom. Mr. Hafstrom worked as a machine operator for
Olivers, and as a custodian for the South Bend School Corporation
until his retirement in 1981. He is survived by a sister,
Marguerite Hertel of Mishawaka, Ind.; three nieces,
Marilyn Tohulka of Mishawaka, Diane Collins of
South Bend and JoAnn Shinneman of Arlington, Texas; and by
a nephew, Dean Anderson of Granger, Ind.
Mr. Hafstrom was a World War II Army
veteran. He was a radio operator during World War II in Burma,
India, and wore three battle stars on his service ribbon, a Good
Conduct Medal and a Presidential Citation. He received an
honorable discharge from the U.S. Army on Sept. 8, 1945. He
enjoyed fishing, and loved Notre Dame football, Chicago
basketball and baseball.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 10, in the Kaniewski Funeral Chapel, where friends
may call for one hour prior to the service. Entombment will
follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made
to the Evangelical Covenant Church, 3025 E. Edison Road, South
Bend, IN 46615.
