Lewis H. ''Gus'' Gushwa Sr., 73, of Broadway Street, Mishawaka, died unexpectedly in his home Friday at 7 a.m. Mr. Gushwa was born in South Bend on Sept. 23, 1923 to Lee and Gertrude Gushwa, who preceded him in death.
On Oct. 2, 1945, he married Ruth E. Gerard at the First Baptist Church in South. She survives along with two sons; Lewis H. (Judy) Gushwa Jr. of Rochester and Tracy D. (Tina) Gushwa of Mishawaka; two daughters, Judith A. (Gene H.) Grenert of Granger and Stacy J. (Michael) Grattenthaler of Mishawaka; five brothers, Donald Gushwa of Osceola, Richard Gushwa of Las Vegas, Nev., Robert (Lucy) Gushwa of South Bend, Charles (May) Gushwa of St. Louis, Mo. and Lee (Nancy) Gushwa of Osceola; five grandchildren, Judith A. Lucas of Granger; Gene H. Grenert II of South Bend; Bonnie R. Gushwa of Eugene, Ore; and Megan A. Gushwa of Muncie; Amber M. Grattenthaler of Mishawaka; and four great-grandchildren, Wesley, Dustin, Jeremy Lucas of Granger, Skyler Grenert of South Bend.
Lewis was employed for 20 years by the Studebaker Corp. until they closed in 1963. He was then a heavy equipment mechanic at Michiana Regional Airport until he retired in 1985. He was a World War II veteran who served with honor and distinction from 1941 to 1945. He served in the European theater and participated in several major campaigns including the Normandy Invasion (D-Day) and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of VFW Post 360.
There will be a veteran's service at Fairview Cemetery on Wednesday morning following the funeral service Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Bubb Funeral Home, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. Viewing is scheduled for Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung association and the Ronald McDonald House. He was loved by many and will forever be in our hearts. Rest in peace, dad.
