South Bend Tribune 12/30/2007
SOUTH BEND - This is a tribute to an officer, a gentleman, and
one of God's finest creations. Lt. Col. James F. Gruver (retired)
always considered serving his country a privilege and an honor.
If he were here today he would tell you that 62 years ago he was
in Paris, France, proudly serving as Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's
finance officer. Jim was awarded three bronze stars and was a
member in good standing of the Reserve Officers Association for
over 50 years. Col. Jim, as he was known to his friends and
acquaintances, served on the Republican Presidential Task Force
under the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H. Bush and
George W. Bush. When Jim returned home after WWII he began a long
career with Standard Oil Corporation, now BP. He retired after 34
years of service as one of the top real estate agents in the
country. The Honorable James F. Gruver was commissioned a
Kentucky Colonel in 1965. Along the way he enjoyed the friendship
and camaraderie of his friends as president of the South Bend
Exchange Club and as a member of the Olympic Club where he worked
out daily. His kindness and his extreme generosity touched many
lives.
The Colonel and his former wife, Ruth Recktenwall
(deceased) co-created two beautiful children: James Paul (Sue Ann
Wilkinson), Minneapolis, and Mary Kay (David Monico),
Noblesville, IN. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Neal Schmits,
Kelly (Kevin Mangin), James III, William, John and Libbie
(Dale Brand). From these came 18 precious
great-grandchildren. The Colonel is survived by his wife of 18
years, Anna Maria Kowal Gruver. Their devotion towards
each other was complete and beautiful. They were each twice
blessed and will love each other into eternity.
All are welcome to celebrate the Mass
Christian Burial on Jan 7th at 11 o'clock in the church at Holy
Cross College followed by the committal rite at St. Joseph Valley
Memorial Park Mausoleum where he will be entombed. Funeral
arrangements provided by McGann Hay Funeral Homes. In lieu of
flowers, please make a donation in Jim's memory to The Center for
Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook
Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
