South Bend Tribune 3/18/2003

Anna Marie Grosvenor, 92, a resident of River Park, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in Caring Junction Nursing Home. She was born on Sept. 12, 1910, in Argos, Ind., to Elvin and Elsie (Griswold) Kelsey, and had lived in the South Bend community most of her life.

On Nov. 16, 1931, in Marshall County, Ind., she married Gerald C. Grosvenor and enjoyed 64 years of marriage before his death on June 24, 1996. Mrs. Grosvenor is survived by two sons and their wives, William C. (Carol) Grosvenor of Indianapolis, Ind., and Merl D. (SueAnne) Grosvenor of Battle Creek, Mich.; three granddaughters, Susan M. Grosvenor, Anne L. Grosvenor and Tamara S. Hatch; one grandson, John D. Grosvenor; two great-grandsons; one sister, Ruth Witmer of Leo, Ind.; and by one step-granddaughter, five step-great-grandchildren and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Noel Howard Grosvenor in 1996; one brother, Robert Lyle Kelsey; and by three sisters, Vivian Nelson, Eva Zentz and Ella Rettinger.

Mrs. Grosvenor was a member of Central United Methodist Church, South Bend, for many years, then River Park United Methodist Church in later years. In her youth she helped attend the needs of sick and elderly relatives. Never being a proud woman, a moment in her life that she was proud of was her graduation from high school in April 1929 from Talma High School, Talma, Ind., after which she moved to South Bend for employment opportunities. During her marriage to Gerald (after being a homemaker), she helped him in his business efforts. She ironed the towels that he used in his barber shop, she kept the books during the time he ran the furniture store, and handled the cleaning efforts of both rental properties and the Motor Haven Motel, Osceola, Ind. She enjoyed sewing her own clothes and occasionally making clothes for other relatives. She sewed as late as 1995, making individual laundry bags for her great-grandchildren for Christmas. During her retirement years she also enjoyed gardening; tending her flower garden was her greatest joy.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Philip Abram, pastor of River Park United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Sandridge Cemetery, Bourbon, Ind. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Anna Marie Grosvenor may be given to the River Park United Methodist Church, 920 S. 23rd Street, South Bend, IN 46615.
