Rev. Elmer G. Gross CSC, 71, of Holy
Cross House, Notre Dame, died Monday afternoon at Holy Cross
House. He was born March 13, 1914 in Memomonee Falls, Wis., and
entered the Congregation of Holy Cross July 1, 1931. He made his
first profession of vows July 2, 1932, and his final profession
Aug. 16, 1935. A 1936 graduate of Notre Dame, he studied theology
at Holy Cross College, Washington DC, and was ordained to the
priesthood in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame in 1940. He was
first assigned to parish work at St. Bernards in Watertown,
Wis. serving there from 1940 to 1943. The following three years
he served as chaplain at Sacred Heart School in Watertown, and
from 1946 to 1948 he returned to Notre Dame as a member of the
faculty. He was then assigned to Santiago, Chile, where he served
for 16 years. He also served in Austin, Texas as assistant pastor
from 1964 to 1978 at Doloate Church, and in 1978 of St. Marys
Cathedral. He was later assigned to Sacred Heart Church in New
Orleans from 1979 to 1982; and returned to Texas in 1982 to St.
Joseph Church in Kileen, Texas; and from 1983 to 1985 at San Jose
Church in Austin.
A wake service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday
in the Chapel of Moreau Seminary at Notre Dame, where a funeral
mass will be at 11:30 a.m. The body will be sent to San Jose
Church, Austin, Texas, where a wake service will be at 8 p.m.
Friday, with a funeral mass at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will
follow in Assumption Cemetery in Austin.
