SOUTH BEND - Brother James Edward
Greteman CSC, died on May 21, 2008, at Holy Cross Village,
Notre Dame, IN. Born to Victor and Anna Zitzlsperger,
James attended St. Mary's Grade School and Carrollton High School
in Carroll, IA. He also attended Creighton University, Iowa State
College and St. Edward's University, the latter while in Austin,
TX, being formed for Holy Cross. He belonged to several school
societies: Sodality of the Blessed Virgin, Holy Name Society,
Newman Club, Phi Kappa (Catholic), and the Catholic Youth Club.
Br. James applied for admission and was admitted to the mission
of the Brothers of Holy Cross in September, 1953, at Watertown,
WI. He was approved to begin his novitiate experience in January
1954, in Rolling Prairie, IN.
He made his first vows in January of 1955
and his final vows in 1958. James became a trusted professional.
He did not hesitate to use his extensive hobby of painting to
benefit other individuals. Larger groups who had seen his work
commissioned him to paint for them also. His favorite subjects
were western landscapes and privately commissioned portraits. Br.
James had for years suffered questionable health, but he
continued to live three years in Bangladesh before his health
forced him to return to the United States. Brother James loved to
travel, often doing so with other brother members of the Midwest
Province. He had been stationed first in Bangladesh, but after
returning to the Untied States, he eventually found his
counseling skills being called into play. He was able to do
marriage and divorce counseling in Evansville, Indianapolis, IN,
Catholic Charities of Sioux City, IA, and San Antonio, TX, and
lastly he worked in South Bend, IN. He put time in for both the
Brothers of Holy Cross and the University of Notre Dame. James'
wit, humor, intellect, and social gifts in general will be missed
tangibly. He enjoyed his retirement and when he died he was
working on several commissioned art pieces. While living at Holy
Cross Village his helpful nature was especially apparent for
others in the Village. He was quick to offer help and friendship
to his neighbors whenever he could.
Br. James' funeral will be held Tuesday, May
27 in the St. Joseph Chapel, 54515 St. Road 933, in the center of
the brothers' campus. Viewing is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. on the
27th, at which time the Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated and with its conclusion; burial will take place in the
St. Joseph Cemetery of the Brothers. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
