John M. Grenert, 63, of Browne Lane, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. John was born on April 25, 1936, in Lakeville, Ind., and was a lifelong area resident. In 1998 John retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation as a teacher at Swanson Highland Elementary School. John was a totally devoted teacher for 34 years. He was a compassionate man who was a father, mentor and friend to everyone. No favor was too big to ask, or no time was too much to spend if you needed him.
On Nov. 14, 1963, in Greenley, Colo., John married Peggy A. Krien, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Johnna (Michael) Grenert-Taff of South Bend; two sons, Michael H. and Eric A., both of South Bend; a grandchild; three brothers, Jesse, Elmer and George, all of South Bend; and by four sisters, Catherine Doerr of South Bend, Mary Schlemmer of North Liberty, Ind., Sue LaGue and Joyce Grenert, both of South Bend. John was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and William Grenert; and by a sister, Martha Warner.
Services will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, where friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Camp Mill House, 25600 Kelly Road, South Bend, IN 46614; or to Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1709 Fulkerson Street, Niles, MI 49120, c/o Rev. Dennis Giden.
