Brother Valery Greenwell C.S.C.

Brother Valery (Paul) Greenwell, C.S.C. was born to William and Isebelle (Bowling) Greenwell in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 29, 1918.

He graduated from St. James Parish grade school there, spent a year and a half at St. Xavier High School before entering Sacred Heart Postulate, Watertown, Wis., in 1936. He went to St. Joseph's Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, Ind., in February 1938 and made his first profession of vows there on Feb. 2, 1939.

For two years after profession of vows, Brother Valery was a cook, first at Sacred Heart Postulate, Watertown, then at Dujarie Hall, Notre Dame, Ind. Following a year as prefect at Gibault School for Boys, Terre Haute, Ind., he was assigned to Ave Maria Press, Notre Dame, where he worked until his retirement in 1988 - with the exception of two years (1952-53) at the University of Notre Dame Power Plant. At the Ave Maria he worked in the bindery as foreman of that department for more than 35 years, and in the mail room. During all of those years, he was constantly on call to answer fire alarms coming to the university's fire department. He lived in the fire house for 18 of his 61 years of his profession in Holy Cross.

After leaving Ave Maria Press, he served the Holy Cross community at Corby Hall, Notre Dame, in a variety of ways, most notably as the house chauffeur. He continued to pursue his avocation as an accomplished carpenter, turning out cradles, toys and other useful objects for children and others. In 1999, after some health problems, he lived in Holy Cross House until his death on Tuesday. What the community will miss most are Brother Val's dutiful devotion and his unique, homespun Kentucky humor.

Brother Val is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Griffin of Louisville, Ky., and Ann Fuchs of Jeffersontown, Ky.; a brother-in-law, Albert Fuchs; and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

A vigil service will be celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. in Moreau Seminary and a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, Jan. 24, at 3:30 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, Ind.

Burial will follow in the community cemetery.
