Charles H. Goss

Charles H. Goss, 84, residing on North Donald Street, South Bend, passed away at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in Hospice House of St. Joseph County. He was born August 19, 1920, in Clinton, OK, as the son of William C. and Nellie (Shields) Goss, and had resided here most of his life.

 

In October 1942, in South Bend, he married Helen Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen of more than 62 years; along with a daughter, Carole Jones; two sons, Randy (Lynn) Goss and Bill (Jean) Goss, all of South Bend. He is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

Charlie retired from the Bendix Corp. He became a Master Mason on January 21, 1970, by Valley Lodge #738, now Council Oak Lodge #745, and served as Worshipful Master in 1977. He had been a member of Avalon Grotto since 1970 and served as Monarch in 1980, and had served as organist for many years. Since 1971 he had been a member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend where he participated in the 20th degree for many years. He was a member of Order of Eastern Star St. Joseph Chapter #569, where he served as Worthy Patron in 1976 and 1995; was a member of York Rite Chapter #29 where he was Past High Priest, Council 82, where he served as Past Illustrious Master, Commandry #13; and served as Past Commander and received the Distinguished Service Award from Grand Commandry. He was received as a Knight of the York Cross of Honor in Indiana Priority #8 on May 10, 1986, and was also a member of Yeoman of York of Elkhart Preceptory #5. He was also a member of Community Congregational Church in South Bend.

 

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, April 21, 2005, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Services will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Rev. Joel Wood of Community Congregational Church will officiate. A Masonic memorial service will follow by members of Council Oak Lodge #745. Cremation will take place, with burial at Highland Cemetery.
