Brother James Edwin Gormley, CSC, 90, died
on Thursday July 28, 2005 at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind.
He was born to James and Anna (Brooks) Gormley on June 21, 1915,
in Jefferson, Wisconsin. After graduation from Delavan Public
High School, Delavan, Wisconsin, he entered the University of
Notre Dame in 1934, graduating in 1938. Bro. Gormley made his
first profession of vows in Holy Cross on February. 2, 1941, at
St. Joseph's Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, Ind., and his final vows
in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, on August. 16, 1946. Before
entering the novitiate he had spent six months at Sacred Heart
Postulate, Watertown, Wis. Following his profession of vows, Bro.
Gormley spent a semester at Dujarie Hall, Notre Dame, a summer at
Gibault Home for Boys, Terre Haute, Ind., a short period at St.
Charles Boys' Home, Milwaukee, Wis., a year at Msgr. Coyle High
School, Taunton, Mass., and two years at the Community Infirmary
(now Holy Cross House), Notre Dame, Ind. For a number of years he
worked at Ave Maria Press, Notre Dame, in a variety of tasks,
chiefly working in the mailing room.
When he returned from Taunton, Mass., Bro.
Gormley lived for a time in Columba Hall, later living in the
Community Infirmary, and then in the Fire House on the campus.
There, in addition to his duties at Ave Maria Press, he was a
member of the Notre Dame Fire Department under its chief, Bro.
Borromeo Malley. In 1964 he moved to Moreau Seminary, where he
resided for nearly 40 years.
On May 19, 2004, Bro. Gormley entered Holy
Cross House where God had blessed him with a ministry of prayer.
Bro. Gormley was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anna
Gormley and his sisters Mrs. Pat Luchterhand and Katherine
Spenzeira. He is survived by a niece, Erika Luchterhand of New
York, N.Y.
Viewing will be held for Bro. Gormley in the
Chapel of Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, on Sunday
July 31, 2005, from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a wake service at
7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart
Basilica, Notre Dame, Ind., on Monday August 1 at 3:30 p.m.
