SOUTH BEND - Ruben M. Gonzales Sr., 57, passed away at 3:39 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Ruben was born on June 26, 1949, in Uvalde, Texas, to Francisco and Telesfora (Martinez) Gonzales. Preceding him in death were his parents; twin sister, Alicia Hernandez; and brothers, Francisco Jr. and Anastiacio.

On November 24, 1969, Ruben married Elena C. Castro, who survives along with their children, Marivel, Laura, Ruben Jr., Diana and Melissa; grandchildren, Alex, Stephanie, Gavin, Rebecca and Jorden; sisters, Esperanza Martinez and AnaVelia (Carlos) San Miguel; and brothers, Pablo and Raul. Ruben worked as a groundskeeper at the University of Notre Dame from 1974 to 1987. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, bingo and going to the Blue Chip Casino.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 11, in the Cathedral of St. Matthew. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
