Bernice Goldberg

Bernice Goldberg, 93, of St. Louis
Boulevard, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Friday, Feb. 21,
after an extended illness. She was born on March 5, 1903, in
Sokolov-Podlaski, Poland. Bernice came to the United States in
1921 with her sister, Sarah.
She married Abe Goldberg in 1923, and the
two managed a small grocery store. Bernice was a businesswoman
until she retired in 1978. Bernice was an avid storyteller with
an amazing talent for remembering dates and family history. She
was an independent woman who valued her relationships and her
commitment to Jewish tradition. Bernice loved life and her family
above all, and was truly the family matriarch.
She is survived by two sons and
daughters-in-law, Irvin (Dory) Goldberg and Paul (Gloria)
Goldberg of South Bend; four grandchildren, Judy Jankowski
of Annandale, Va., Shari Goldberg of South Bend, Sydney Isley
of Chino Hills, Calif., and Bart Goldberg of Chicago, Ill.; and
two great-grandchildren, Katie and Jeffrey Jankowski of
Annandale.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday
at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made
to Hebrew Orthodox Congregation, or to Hospice House.
