Rev. Walter W. Goff CSC, 66, died
unexpectedly following a heart attack on Monday at Corby Hall on
the Notre Dame campus. He was chaplain of Columba Hall, the Holy
Cross Brothers residence on campus, at the time of his death.
Rev. Goff was born on June 26, 1912 in Reading, Mass. and entered
Holy Cross Seminary at North Dartmouth, Mass. on Aug. 15, 1939.
He made his first profession of vows in 1941 and was ordained a
priest in 1945 at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. He taught at
the Columbia Preparatory School, University of Portland, Ore.
from 1946 to 1948 and from 1949 to 1951. He was a member of the
University of Portland faculty from 1951 to 1964. He then served
as retreat and mission master from 1964 to 1967 and became
chaplain at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1967. He
returned to Notre Dame in 1968 as an assistant pastor at Little
Flower Catholic Church. He was named chaplain to the brothers at
Columba Hall in 1970 and also served as chronicler for the Holy
Cross Community.
A funeral mass will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday
in the Moreau Seminary Chapel, with burial in the Community
Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday in Columba Hall where a wake service will be at 7:30
p.m.
