Brother Leon Gnewuch CSC, 85, of Columba Hall, Notre Dame, died Thursday morning in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was born Nov. 18, 1898 in Milwaukee and joined the Brothers of Holy Cross at Watertown, Wis. He made his first profession of vows on July 2, 1927 and final profession in 1930. In 1931 his first assignment was as an English teacher at the University of Portland, followed by an assignment at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans. He later served at Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne, at Reitz Memorial in Evansville, Ind., and from 1942 to 1947 at Vincention Institute in Albany, N.Y.

 

From 1947 to 1948 he taught at Central Catholic in South Bend, from 1948 to 1966 at Holy Trinity High School in Chicago, and later at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. In the following years he tutored in South Bend, at Holy Trinity in Chicago, and then for three years in Akron, Ohio. He returned to Columba Hall in 1981 where he resided until his death. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he received his B.A. degree in 1931, and his master’s in 1938.He is survived by two sisters, Flora Gnewuch of Milwaukee, and Margaret Laidig of San Jose, Calif.

 

A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Holy Cross Brothers Center, where friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of St. Joseph Brothers Center and burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery on the campus of Holy Cross College.
