A young New Carlisle couple was killed and a two-year-old
daughter injured severely about 11 p.m. Friday in a
semitrailer-car accident on U.S. 20, about six miles west of
South Bend.
Pronounced dead at the scene were Joel Glon, 19, and his wife,
Terry, 20 of Rt. 1, Spirea Road, New Carlisle. An autopsy was to
be performed this morning, but Dr. James McMeel, deputy county
coroner, said preliminary indications are that both died of
severe brain injuries.
The daughter, Tina, was listed in fair condition this morning
in the special care unit at Memorial Hospital with two broken
legs, a fractured pelvis, a skull fracture and possible internal
injuries.
The Glon car was westbound on U.S. 20 when it collided with a
semitrailer being driven by James A. Whitmeyer, of Rt. 1, Kelsey
Lake, Cassopolis, according to reports.
According to Trooper Michael Kwasneski, Whitmeyer lost control
of his vehicle on the wet, slushy roadway about 200 feet east of
Sage Road and crossed the center line into the path of the Glon
car which struck the right fuel tank of the semi.
As both vehicles veered off the north side of the highway, the
trailer section of the semi fell over onto the roof of the Glons
car, trapping them inside. The New Carlisle fire department
reserve unit had to be called to help free the victims from the
car.
The accident remains under investigation.
Glon was born May 11, 1958, in Buchanan, and lived in the area
most of his life. He was a farmer. Mrs. Glon was born Aug. 24,
1957, in South Bend, as Terry Toth, and lived her lifetime in the
area. She was a waitress at the Home Café in New Carlisle.
The Glons were married on Oct. 5, 1975, in New Carlisle.
Surviving is the daughter, Tina, who was injured in the accident.
Glon also is survived by his mother, Mrs. Joanne Glon of New
Carlisle, a sister, Miss Laura Glon, and two brothers, Leon and
John, all of New Carlisle.
Mrs. Glon is survived by her father, Steve Toth of North
Liberty, three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Addington of South Bend, Mrs.
Roseanne Flanders of Edwardsburg, and Miss Linda Toth of North
Liberty., and six brothers, Steve Toth Jr. of Mishawaka, Ernie
Toth of South Bend, Eugene Toth of Niles, and Donald, Ronald and
