SOUTH BEND - Helen J. Gerschoffer, 77, of 2203 S. Chapin St., died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in her home after an illness. Mrs. Gerschoffer was born Jan. 7, 1917, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident.

On Nov. 9, 1940, in South Bend, as Helen J. Madaras, she married John A. Gerschoffer. He died Sept. 24, 1981. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Neumann of Niles; two sons, John C. of South Bend and Emory of Niles; and four grandchildren. She was a member of the Golden Clusters of Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, and the St. Ann's Society of the church.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Zahoran Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 3 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Rescue Mission.
