SOUTH BEND - Betty J. Germann, 86, passed away on June 14th in
Unity Medical Surgical Hospital, Mishawaka. Betty was born on
December 10, 1923, in South Bend, to William Howard and Evelyn
(Schultz) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents. On
July 24, 1942, in Mishawaka, as the former Betty Johnson, she
married Donald H. German, who preceded her in death on December
24, 2000. Surviving are three sons, Timothy (Janet) Germann of
Osceola, Gregory (Norma) Germann of South Bend and Perry (Vickie)
Germann of Elkhart; a sister, Judith (Bill) Severeid of
Mishawaka; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; a
nephew, Blaine (Judy) Rogers, and niece, Leslie (Bob) Skinner.
Betty was a Cub Scout leader for many years, a 4-H leader, a
volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital in the gift shop and in the
surgery waiting room, worked with March of Dimes and on the
board, was a lifetime member of Turners and served as recording
secretary, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She cared for foster
children over the years. She worked next to dad when there was an
emergency for the county since dad was Civil Defense Director for
St. Joseph County for over two decades. They loved camping with
the family and pets, and family vacations with the children
throughout the years. She was a friend to all who met her. She
was always there to help out where needed. We will all miss such
a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She was such a sassy character who would bring
a laugh to all who knew her. The love her and dad shared for
animals was truly touching. A Memorial service will be Saturday,
June 26th, at noon in Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pet
Refuge, Inc., 2300 W. 6th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544; or to the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 2004 Ironwood Circle #140,
South Bend, IN 46635. Hahn Funeral Home, Mishawaka, is handling
the arrangements. To leave the family a condolence, please visit
