SOUTH BEND - Rev. John C. Gerber, CSC, 64, of Holy Cross House, University of Notre Dame, died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday in his residence. Rev. Gerber entered the novitiate Aug. 15, 1948; pronounced his first vows Sept. 6, 1949; made his perpetual profession Aug. 16, 1953; and was was ordained a priest June 5, 1957.
He was born Sept. 22, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio. He is survived by his mother, Sylvia Gerber of Toledo; three sisters, Ann Murnen of Toledo, Cecilia Gerber of Lansing and Bernadette Scott of Williston, Ohio; and a brother, James of Walbridge, Ohio.
He taught at Notre Dame, Stonehill College and an Indian school in St. Michaels, Ariz. He was religious superior for the Holy Cross community from 1974-79; served as religious superior and rector of Moreau Seminary from 1984-90; and also served as chaplain at Fischer-O'Hara-Grace Graduate residences and in faculty relations for the Office of Campus Ministry. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Holy Cross College, Washington, D.C.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Basilica. Burial will be in Community Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today in Moreau Seminary, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m.
