Peter John George

Peter John George died on Monday,
Sept. 28, at 81 years of age. He was treated for pneumonia at St.
Joseph's Medical Center for one week before his death. Pete was
born in Michigan City, Ind. to Lebanese immigrant parents, Mary
and Tony George on March 8, 1917. He was the second of five
children. His siblings are Julia, Mary, Rose and Paul. During his
school years he was known as both an excellent student and a
great athlete. He graduated first in his class from St. Mary's
High School (today Marquette), and excelled on the basketball
court throughout his four years. Pete graduated from Purdue
University in 1939 with a Chemical Engineering degree. Upon
graduation he moved to Newark, New Jersey and Louisville,
Kentucky for jobs within his field. He returned to the Midwest to
support the war time effort by working at the Kingsbury
ammunition plant outside LaPorte, Ind. In 1944 he was hired by
Uniroyal in Mishawaka, Ind. where he was a dedicated employee for
thirty years. He was given an early retirement in March, 1974.
Pete had a very active and fulfilling life
after retirement. He was an avid golfer and loved to walk the
course even if he was not playing. He played Duplicate bridge and
was a member of the South Bend Bridge Center. Pete, a good
Samaritan and people person, delivered Meals on Wheels for
seventeen years beginning in 1981 and continuing until his
hospitalization. He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and a
most devoted Catholic his entire life. Pete (Dad) is survived by
his five children: Gwen, Tony, Daniel, Peter, Jr., and Judy, as
well as five grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.
today at the McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road at
Ironwood, where the Rosary will be prayed at 4:15 p.m. The
funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in St. Anthony's
Church. Newly ordained Father Mark, Pete's nephew, will be
co-celebrating Mass. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. at
the Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
