SOUTH BEND - Raymond Garrett, 87, of South Bend, formerly of Ft.
Wayne, IN, died Friday in the Center for Hospice and Palliative
Care, Elkhart. He was born on Aug. 7, 1922, in Penn Twp., Jay
Co., IN. He began teaching at Pennville High school, teaching
there from 1947 to 1948, then taught at Union Center School in
Wells County from 1948 to 1957. From 1957 to 1987 he taught
mathematics at Elmhurst High School. He was a graduate of
Pennville High School in 1940, had attended Taylor University for
three years, and then graduated from Ball State University in
1947. He received his master's degree from Ball State in 1957. He
was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Organization. He was
a World War II Army veteran, a member of Grace United Methodist
Church, South Bend, and had formerly attended Waynedale United
Methodist Church, Ft. Wayne, where he served as an usher and was
a member for 43 years. Mr. Garrett enjoyed keeping time at
Elmhurst basketball games. He is survived by his wife, Bertha B.
Garrett of South Bend; children, Paul B. (Carol) Garrett, Inver
Grove Heights, MN, Joseph B. (Elaine) Garrett of South Bend, IN,
David B. (Junko) Garrett of Los Angeles, CA, and Karen A. (Peter)
Garrett of Manhatten, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Mary Garrett of
Hartford City, IN, and Jeane Garett of Muncie, IN; cousins,
Thelora Mason, Eileen Diehm, Cloyce Avey, Norman Priest, Merlyn
Dubaugh, Helen Case and Don Garrett; several nieces and nephews,
and many friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl
and Robert Garrett. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14th,
in The Gilead Church, Jay County, IN, with calling one hour
before services. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Twin Hills Cemetery,
Pennville, IN. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug.
13, in Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail
Road, Ft. Wayne, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
the music departments of Grace United Methodist Church and
Waynedale United Methodist Church, to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery
Fund or to Gilead Church.
