SOUTH BEND - Evelyn A. Garbacz, 88, of Copperfield Drive,
went home to be with the Lord on April 24 in her daughter's home.
She was born to Aloysius and Mary (Bednar) Aftowski
in South Bend on March 23, 1920.
In 1941 she married John Kryzyzewski.
They had a daughter, Joyce. John was killed during WWII aboard
the U.S.S. Indianapolis in 1946. Evelyn married John Garbacz of
the "Golfing Garbaczes." They had two sons, John and
Kevin, and a daughter, Kim. Evelyn was preceded in death by both
of her husbands, her parents, a sister, Marie (George) Smith,
and a brother, Jack Aftowski. She is survived by two sisters,
Virginia (Daniel) DeVreese of South Bend, Patricia (Ray) Czarnecki
of South Bend; in-laws, Eunice Aftowski of South Bend, Mike
(Georgia) Garbacz of South Bend and Nick (Millie) Garbacz of Palm
Beach, FL; four children, Joyce Wisemiller of South Bend,
John (Connie) Garbacz of South Bend, Kevin Garbacz of Crown Point
and Kim (Brian) Lundgren of Savannah, GA; two stepsons,
Davie (Maggie) Garbacz of Pahala, HI, and Larry (Barbara) Garbacz
of Washington Township, MI. Also surviving are five grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Evelyn spent her time here on earth loving
and supporting her family and causes in which she believed. She
will be remembered for her generosity, hospitality, her joy and
love for her family, and her thoughtfulness toward those less
fortunate. She was always willing to share, whether she had a lot
or very little. Evelyn loved everything growing, whether it be a
person or a plant. She worked for years for Ernie's Supermarket
and Thrifty-Mart, from which she retired. Even then, one of her
joys was to stroll through the aisles shopping and visiting with
everyone she knew. The family thanks all the wonderful people who
served Evelyn in her last season here on earth. Heartfelt thanks
to Dr. Ebonee Davis and her staff; to the staff and residents at
Inwood Hills Estates; to the nurses, aides and staff at Healthwin
(especially on NW-2); to the St. Joseph Visiting Nurse staff; to
the Hospice staff; to special friends, O'B, Connie T. and Bonnie;
to all the saints who lifted her and the family in prayers; to
the girls living at home with Evelyn; and to her four angels,
Terrica, Evelyn, Eva and Theresa. We are eternally grateful to
all of you.
Per her request, Evelyn will be cremated
with no viewing or visitation. Evelyn wanted everyone to remember
and celebrate her life with a gathering of her family. The family
plans a celebration of life picnic at a later date. Memorial
contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
