Brother Andrew Corsini Fowler, CSC, 87, died peacefully at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Holy Cross House on Douglas Road, Notre Dame, Ind. Br. Andrew Corsini Fowler was born John Fowler on Feb. 8, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., to LeRoy and Minette (Bell) Fowler. He attended St. Bernard's parish school in 1930. After the family moved to Elkhart, Ind., he attended Elkhart High School, graduating in 1934. After a year at St. Procopius College in Lisle, Ill., he returned to Elkhart and worked in a local theater before coming to Holy Cross. John Fowler received the habit of a Holy Cross brother Aug. 15, 1940, and was given the religious name of Andrew Corsini. He made first vows a year later, on Sept. 15, 1941, and took final vows Aug. 16, 1946.
Br. Andrew Corsini spent the vast majority of his religious life in service to his brothers as a first-rate cook and kitchen manager. For over 31 years he nourished many a body and soul at Moreau Seminary, St. Charles Boys Home, Andre House Brother's Postulancy, Notre Dame High School, Foreign Mission Seminary and Holy Cross Mission House. Never one to sit around, he also worked in the Province Archives and the Placement Bureau at the University of Portland. While at time a bit of a self-proclaimed curmudgeon, he could always be counted upon to add to our common life. His brothers in community knew that he put on the "tough guy" manner in order to cover a soft heart and generous nature.
As Br. Andrew's diabetic condition worsened, he made one last move to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, in 1997 where he resided until his death. He was an active participant in community prayer and activities until the end. Br. Andrew is survived by a niece, Patricia Duffey, and her son, Jamie Duffey ,and a nephew, John David Duffey, all from Cincinnati, Ohio.
A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today, Nov. 4, for Br. Andrew in the chapel of Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. Burial will follow at the Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, Ind. is in charge of arrangements.
